MOMO-0101 – Delivering the competencies needed by tomorrow’s pharmacy workforce
Doug Scheckelhoff, Senior Vice President of Practice Advancement, ASHP, USA
The rapidly evolving pharmacy landscape requires new skills and competencies that go far beyond our standard pharmacy education. ASHP has developed a range of training and educational programmes designed to equip pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with the skills necessary to meet their practice needs throughout their career.
Professional certificate programmes are online, self-guided learning activities designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Programmes cover clinical and therapeutic areas, operational or functional areas, leadership and management, and more.
ASHP also sets the standards and accredits programmes which provide pharmacy residencies. A residency is a one-year programme that enhances clinical skills and knowledge, develops specialty training, and builds leadership and research capabilities.
Many pharmacists practicing in specialty areas pursue recognition of their competencies through board certification. ASHP collaborates with other organisations to offer preparatory materials for candidates taking their board examination and specialty continuing education required to maintain certification.
ASHP and the ASHP Foundation offer places on the pharmacy leadership academy—a 12-month, online programme designed to develop leadership skills in pharmacy professionals. The curriculum covers topics such as leadership influence, transformational change, and sustained organisational and individual success. The programme is recognised by colleges and universities for graduate credit towards a master's degree.
This session will describe how these programmes have been designed and developed, and how they can ensure that the pharmacy workforce has the skills and competencies it needs to provide safe and effective patient care in today’s fast-evolving healthcare environment.
MOMO-0102 – Knowledge networks: Innovating for the individual
Nick Sharp-Paul, COO, Advanced Pharmacy Australia, Australia
Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha) is a proud innovator of knowledge networks for pharmacy in Australia which provide a supportive ecosystem that wraps around each individual pharmacist and technician member.
The ecosystem has four key components: recognising expertise, understanding the profession, anticipating future challenges, and promoting evidence-based practice evolution.
This session will highlight key initatives developed by AdPha to achieve this aim. Firstly, a programme delivered by the Australian and New Zealand College of Advanced Pharmacy (ANZCAP) which addresses the need for formal recognition of pharmaceutical expertise and specialisation, by establishing clear career progression pathways for pharmacists across all practice settings through recognition levels. Secondly, an overview of insights into the advanced pharmacy workforce and its contribution to the healthcare system, to support stronger advocacy and improved workforce planning.
The session will also describe a strategic forecasting initiative which offers insight into emerging trends and challenges facing the profession. By synthesising expert perspectives from across Australia's pharmacy landscape, the forecast empowers practitioners to anticipate and prepare for future developments, helping align individual career trajectories with broader professional trends.
Finally, the session will present the success of education and specialty practice programmes which support skills development, growth in clinical knowledge, connection and inspiration in the short and medium term, supported by a digital community platform.
