The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) recognises that strategic leadership, scale, and delivering on strategy is key to ensuring all pharmacists are equipped for the future.
This session will explore the significant progress PSA has made in delivering on a growth agenda necessary to empower pharmacists—securing landmark government agreements, expanding pharmacist prescribing, investing in workforce development, embracing opportunities to enhance the quality use of medicines, and support innovative pharmacist roles through collaboration and growing our membership by 15%.
These achievements are strengthening the profession and positioning pharmacists to meet evolving healthcare demands. This session will provide insights into how a clear strategic vision, strong advocacy, and targeted investments are delivering tangible outcomes and shaping the future of pharmacy and supporting a workforce ready to lead.
MOTU-0302 – How do pharmaceutical societies empower the profession?
Moureq Alotaibi, President, Saudi Pharmaceutical Society, Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Pharmaceutical Society (SPS) has played a pivotal role in advancing the pharmacy profession in Saudi Arabia. Through its strategic initiatives, SPS has significantly contributed to the development of the healthcare system and the empowerment of pharmacists across various specialties.
This session will highlight the key acheivements of the SPS, including the establishment of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), which has since become a cornerstone for regulating pharmaceuticals, ensuring drug safety, and enhancing public health. This recommendation laid the foundation for a robust regulatory framework, improving medication quality and patient safety across the Kingdom.
Additionally, SPS has actively worked toward the enforcement of pharmacy profession practices within the healthcare system, advocating for the critical role of pharmacists in clinical settings. By integrating pharmacists into multidisciplinary healthcare teams, SPS has strengthened pharmaceutical care services and optimised patient outcomes.
SPS has also been instrumental in training 600 medication safety officers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to minimise medication errors and enhance drug safety protocols in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
In the academic and research domain, SPS has made remarkable strides by publishing the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal (SPJ), which has achieved the highest impact factor of any medical journal in the MENA region. This achievement underscores the society’s commitment to pharmaceutical research and knowledge dissemination.
Furthermore, SPS actively recognises and awards inspiring pharmacists who demonstrate excellence in their field, fostering a culture of innovation and dedication. The society also plays a crucial role in empowering pharmacists across diverse specialties such as narcotics management, supply chain, pharmacovigilance, informatics, and community pharmacy, ensuring they have the necessary expertise to lead and innovate in their respective domains.
This session will highlight how, through these comprehensive initiatives, SPS continues to elevate the pharmacy profession and contribute to the advancement of healthcare in Saudi Arabia.
