Overview MOTU-0101 – Delivering the competencies needed by tomorrow’s pharmacy workforce Daniel Zlott, Senior Vice President, Education & Business Development, APhA, USA The American Pharmacists Association’s (APhA) mission states: “As the voice of pharmacy, the American Pharmacists Association leads the profession and equips members for their role as the medication expert in team-based, patient-centered care.” To achieve this mission, two of the major areas of focus and activity for APhA are advocacy and education. Changes and advances in the profession cannot be achieved without adopting the right vision, creating a sense of urgency, and developing and implementing appropriate strategies to engage and collaborate with key stakeholders. Most importantly, APhA’s members – pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists - must be motivated and empowered to bring about the needed change and overcome any challenges and barriers. Traditional approaches to continuing education—focused mainly on transferring knowledge—are no longer adequate. Educational activities must not only support the development and maintenance of new competencies but also instill a commitment to change. APhA produces a wide range of certificate training programmes and advanced training programmes to achieve these objectives. The content, format, and teaching methods are designed to ensure optimal learning outcomes and impact in practice. The session will provide an update on the key issues and challenges that APhA and the profession of pharmacy are currently facing in the USA, and the strategies that have been implemented to address them. The session will profile the variety of educational activities that support the professional development of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and student pharmacists and prepare them to provide optimal patient care. Finally, the session will describe major changes to APhA’s membership structure, governance, and bylaws to adapt to the evolving needs in the profession, and ensure that the Association can best represent and serve the diverse pharmacy workforce and meet the needs of all practitioners. MOTU-0102 – Pioneering initiatives of the French Chamber of Pharmacists regarding attractivity, security and the recognition of new missions in France Mrs Carine Wolf-Thal, President, French Chamber Of Pharmacists, France & Mrs Maryse Camus-Piszez, Member, French Chamber Of Pharmacists, France This session will present the French Chamber of Pharmacists’ pioneering initiatives relating to the attractiveness of the profession and for the safety of both pharmacists and patients. The session will present the results of a study on demographic trends which resulted in a predictive model for the demography of all pharmacists in France by 2050 and identified the factors influencing the pharmacy profession’s appeal. The impact of a campaign to boost the attractiveness of pharmacy will also be shared. Regarding the safety of pharmacists, the Chamber has developed a declaration system, a network of safety contact persons, and has filed a civil action in a number of threat or violence cases, among other actions. The Chamber also supports pharmacists who are victims of domestic violence or of chemical submission. It has also developed resources and a network of elected officials, as well as partnerships with different supportive organisations. This session will highlight how the extension of the role of pharmacists, in particular in community pharmacy, are recognised and valued.
