MOWE-0201 – Systematising pharmacy support personnel to address Taiwan’s pharmacy workforce challenges
Dr Yu-Chieh (Jack) Chen & President Yuh-Lih Chang & Director Hui-Chen Su
Despite an overall increase in the pharmacist workforce in Taiwan over the last decade, the number of pharmacists working in hospitals has decreased. High turnover rates and limited clinical roles, in addition to a lack of support for pharmacy technicians to assist with dispensing tasks, further hinder pharmacists’ ability to provide patient-centered care.
The pharmaceutical workforce challenges in Taiwan include widespread shortages in relation to workload, lack of reimbursement for clinical pharmacy services, and a lack of defined roles and qualifications for pharmacy support personnel, leading to limited opportunities for pharmacists to apply their clinical expertise.
The Taiwan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) has identified the establishment of pharmacy support personnel systems as a way of addressing these issues. This session will present the work undertaken to develop task categorisation, define qualifications and scope of work, review and reform staffing standards, and the need to create a sustainable mechanism to address workforce challenges.
This session will highlight how establishing and systematising pharmacy support personnel is critical to addressing Taiwan’s pharmacy workforce challenges, and that through task delegation, clear guidelines and staffing standards, TSHP seeks to foster a sustainable future in pharmacy practice.
MOWE-0202 – New services in Danish community pharmacies
Mrs Birthe Søndergaard
In 2016, the New Medicine Service was introduced in Danish pharmacies, followed by the Compliance Service, addressing non-compliance, in 2019. In 2024, more than 46,000 patients had accessed the New Medicine Service, and more than 16,000 patients had used the Compliance Service.
This session will describe and discuss the political process surrounding a new health care reform, including recommendations for new services and tasks for community pharmacies and how these recommendations have been integrated in the new Danish Pharmacy Act from 1 July 2024.
Within the Pharmacy Act, the Compliance Service has been expanded to include four new target groups. Consequently, the service can now be offered to newly discharged patients, patients starting with dose-dispensed medicine, patients beginning injection therapy, and patients undergoing a deprescribing process. This session will present the process of the development of manuals and materials for the new target groups and explain how they will be used in the implementation of the service.
The Act also authorises pharmaconomists (pharmacy technicians with three years of education) to offer new pharmacy services when they have completed additional education. The content and structure of the locally rooted education within the pharmacy will be presented, along with data on its implementation and satisfaction levels.
The purpose of the session is to illustrate the political process resulting in new ser-vices, how manuals have been created to support implementation, and how an additional education programme for pharmacy technicians rooted in the local pharmacy has been developed. The aim is to inspire other member organisations in FIP and to share experiences.
